St Louis Cardinals v Milwaulkee Brewers
Two great pitchers square off at Busch Stadium on Sunday when Jaime Garcia and the St. Louis Cardinals welcome Zach Greinke and the Milwaukee Brewers to town. Both hurlers can dominate, but this game is all about home-and-away comfort levels. Greinke is not the same pitcher when traveling as at home. In 2011, his first full season in Milwaukee, he was 11-0 with a 3.13 ERA at home compared to 5-6 with a 4.70 ERA on the road. This season, the former Cy Young Award winner is 2-0 with 1.80 ERA at home and 0-1 with a 19.64 ERA on the road. Garcia is also better at home. Lifetime, he has a 2.33 ERA at home and a 4.15 ERA on the road. The difference here: Garcia gets to pitch at home, while Greinke is suffering on the road. Go with the Cardinals at 1.62 and pass on the Brewers at 2.30.
Atlanta Braves v Pittsburgh Pirates
The Atlanta Braves offence has been humming. Coming into the weekend no team in the National League is averaging more runs per game. The reason they’ve been good-but-not-great overall has been the club’s below-average pitching. But when Atlanta faces the Pittsburgh Pirates at home, they should have the best of both worlds. One of their aces – Tim Hudson – will make his first start of the season. The three-time All Star had back surgery in November, which delayed his season. He claims he’s feeling much better as a result of the procedure. Whether we believe him or not, he’s facing the worst offence in the league, which should be a nice welcome back. Atlanta is worth the bet at 1.65, while the Pirates are deservedly long shots here at 2.25.
