The Colorado Rockies’ road woes will continue in Cincinnati, where they will face stiff competition from the Reds on Monday. While the Rockies have been very good at home in 2013, they’ve posted a losing record on the road. Hitting-wise, Colorado batters also have a lower batting average (.259 versus .276) and a lower slugging percentage (.420 versus .446) in away games compared to home contests.
They’ll face Bronson Arroyo, a pitcher who makes the most of his home opportunities. The Reds starter is 4-1 with a 3.18 ERA at Great American Ballpark compared to 1-4 with a 4.45 ERA on the road. While Arroyo has a lifetime 3-3 record with a 4.98 ERA against the Rockies, so much of the damage has come when he’s had to face them at Coors Field. In hitter friendly Denver, he’s 1-2 with a 6.48 ERA.
Rockies starter Tyler Chatwood has been impressive this year (3-0, 2.12 ERA), but the combination of Arroyo’s strong home record and the Rockies’ struggles on the road tip the scales toward the Reds. Pick Cincinnati, on at 1.65, in this match-up.
A battle of scuffling pitchers will be good news for hitters when the Houston Astros visit the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Astros starter Erik Bedard has weak overall numbers (0-2, 5.32 ERA), but has been particularly bad on the road, where he’s been collared with both of his losses and has a 7.33 ERA. Admittedly, Bedard has thrown better of late – his ERA in May was a respectable 3.99 - but he never goes deep into contests. The longest he’s lasted in a game in 2013 is six innings, and he’s only done that twice in nine starts. With the Astros possessing one of the American League’s worst bullpens, late runs are likely.
Angels pitcher Joe Blanton has even less to be thrilled about this year. He currently leads the AL in both losses (8) and hits allowed (100). He has a 5.94 ERA and has clearly been uncomfortable at home where he’s pitched his worst (7.39 ERA). While Houston have not been a stellar hitting team, they do have a good track record against Blanton (.320 batting average). Look for this to be a high scoring affair. Go over 9 runs at 2.05.
