Giants v Diamondbacks
The San Francisco Giants are well-placed (literally) to win against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday. The reason: the game is being played at AT&T Park and Madison Bumgarner is on the mound. Bumgarner’s overall numbers in 2012 are solid: 14-9 with a 3.07 ERA, but when you dig deeper it’s his work at home that has made him so successful. At AT&T he has a sterling 2.15 ERA compared to a 3.93 ERA on the road. As for Arizona hurler Travor Cahill, he’s on a downward slide. Cahill hasn’t won a game since July 30, going 0-2 with a 5.08 ERA since then. His work against the Giants has not been stellar: He’s 0-2 with a 6.17 ERA in two starts. (His one outing in San Francisco he was torched for four runs in six innings). Pick the Giants at 1.60 instead of the Diamondbacks at 2.35.
Tigers v Indians
The Detroit Tigers at home are the pick against the Cleveland Indians. After a poor start to the year (and a handful of injuries), Detroit’s Doug Fister has rounded into form. He saw his ERA balloon to 4.75 on July 7, but has had very few bad outings. In fact, since then, he’s only given up more than two earned runs in a contest twice in nine starts. The visiting Indians will also be a welcome sight for Fister as the pitcher is 4-3 with an excellent 2.33 ERA in 11 career starts against Cleveland. The Indians Ubaldo Jimenez continues to be a massive disappointment. In his past ten starts he is 1-7 with a 7.79 ERA. That’s not going to get the job done for the Indians (on at 2.90). So look for a Tigers win at 1.41.
