Home run (Safe bet)
Go with the Los Angeles Dodgers, on at 1.61, to win at home versus the Atlanta Braves.
Quite simply, Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke will be in his comfort zone in this Wednesday clash. Greinke has a long history of success at his home ballpark. While that track record has been well-chronicled in this column, here’s a quick refresher – he’s 6-1 with a 2.73 ERA at Dodger Stadium this year and over his career he has an impressive 15-3 record and a 2.30 ERA in 23 starts there. In fact, wherever he’s called home he’s dominated to the tune of a 69-33 record with a solid 3.25 ERA (Greinke has also pitched for the Kansas City Royals and the Milwaukee Brewers.)
Beyond Greinke’s strong position, the Dodgers are also aided by the Braves sending Alex Wood to the pitcher’s mound. Wood has solid overall numbers (3.44 ERA), but he’s lost quite a bit of momentum as of late. In his past four games, he’s 1-2 with a 4.24 ERA. In particular, he comes into this game following a drubbing at the hands of the lowly San Diego Padres. In that game, he allowed a considerable twelve hits and five runs in five innings of work.
Squeeze play (Gutsiest call)
Take the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at 1.75 to capture a road victory at the Baltimore Orioles.
Baltimore may be a division leader, but they will be hard-pressed to win this one. Angels’ starter Garrett Richards is a key factor here. He has been a beast on the road in 2014. In eleven away outings he’s a sparkling 6-1 with a 1.83 ERA. He gets to face an Orioles team that has been ice cold at bat over the past two weeks. During that stretch, Baltimore hitters own a .202 batting average, .266 on base percentage and .347 slugging percentage (Those numbers are even worse during the past week, where they drop to .189, .254 and .290, respectively.)
The Orioles are giving Kevin Gausman the starting assignment. The pitcher has a 5.06 ERA over his past two contests and hasn’t been too good at home this season, posting a 4.33 ERA in five starts at Camden Yards. The Los Angeles lineup he’ll face should be well-positioned for success. They’ve done very well on the road all year long. In 47 away contests they have averaged more than five runs a game.
