Phillies v Pirates
The Philadelphia Phillies are the team to pick on Tuesday when they play host to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Phillies starter Vance Worley has quietly put together a strong campaign. Despite a 3-4 record, he’s posted a 2.78 ERA. More telling, is his performance since coming off the disabled list. In four starts after returning, he has a 2.25 ERA. His opponent Erik Bedard has been extremely up and down this season. After giving up 14 runs in 14 innings in a three-start stretch, he allowed just one run, four hits and two walks over six innings, striking out seven against the Minnesota Twins. That said the key stat for Bedard has been his recent road woes: In his past three away outings he’s given up 16 runs in 13 innings. As a result, take Philadelphia at 1.67 rather than Pittsburgh at 2.20.
Braves v Diamondbacks
It will be the battle of the Hudsons in Atlanta, when Tim (Braves) squares off against Daniel (Arizona Diamondbacks). Tim is the pitcher to back. The Braves hurler is currently in a groove having yielded just five runs in 20 innings over his past three outings – two of which were against the New York Yankees. Atlanta’s Hudson has always thrown well against Arizona, sporting a 6-0 record with a 1.36 ERA versus the Diamondbacks. As for Daniel, he’s coming off a horrible outing in which he gave up seven runs and 10 hits in just four innings of work against the Seattle Mariners. He only has one career start against the Braves, but it wasn’t pretty –four runs and seven hits in six innings. All told, it’s the veteran Tim Hudson who will do the business for the Braves at 1.62, not the relative newcomer Daniel Hudson, whose Arizona club (on at 2.30) should fall.
