The struggles of Rangers starter Scott Feldman should help the Seattle Mariners when they travel to Texas on Saturday. Feldman’s terrible pitching – 0-5 with a 5.97 ERA in his last six starts – makes the Mariners a tantalizing pick. Throw in the fact that Feldman is 0-2 with a 6.30 ERA in three starts against Seattle and it’s hard to choose otherwise.
The Mariners will counter with Jason Vargas. Admittedly, Vargas is better at home (2.62 ERA at home versus 4.92 ERA away), but he’s figured out a way to get wins on the road anyway. He’s 9-6 outside of Seattle compared to 5-4 at home. Take the lowly Mariners at 2.65 rather than the high-riding Rangers at 1.48.
Look for the Pirates to get a much-needed win on the road against the Chicago Cubs. Since being acquired from the Houston Astros, Wandy Rodriguez has performed well. Though he has a 3-4 record, he has delivered a 3.57 ERA and has provided a quality start (six or more innings of work; three or fewer earned runs) in six of his eight starts, including his last four straight.
As for the Cubs, they’re going to rely on Jason Berken, who is only getting the start because the club shut down Jeff Samardzija, who reached an innings limit the team imposed on the young promising starter. It doesn’t provide much hope that Berken was acquired off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles last Friday. Go with the Pirates as Berken, who is 10-17 lifetime with a 5.40 ERA, will likely struggle, leaving the Cubs unlikely to prevail here.
