New York Yankees v Detroit Tigers
The Detroit Tigers will pull off a big win at Yankee Stadium in game one of the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees on Saturday. Tigers starter Doug Fister threw well in his only outing in New York this season, giving up three runs on seven hits and one walk in seven innings. He is also coming off a brilliant performance in Detroit’s American League Divisional Series against the Oakland A’s, in which he gave up two runs (six hits and two walks) and struck out eight in seven innings. Fister also has the advantage of facing a Yankees line-up that is struggling tremendously at the moment. New York scored just nine runs in the final four games of their series against the Baltimore Orioles.
In contrast, the Tigers scored thirteen over the same stretch – and, more importantly, nine of those runs came in their final two games, suggesting they’re starting to click. The Yankees have the all-time record holder for play-off wins, Andy Pettitte, starting for them. Pettitte put up a strong performance in the American League Divisional Series against the Baltimore Orioles, allowing just three runs on seven hits and one walk in seven innings. But considering his team’s offence, he will likely be outdueled by Fister. Pick the Tigers rather than the Yankees.
