Normally the difference between seventh and eighth place matters very little to teams at the end of a long tournament but there’s a massive incentive for Serbia and Italy to end their EuroBasket on a winning note on Saturday in Ljubljana.
To the victor goes the last qualification spot for next summer’s World Cup in Spain. To the loser, nothing. And for the Serbs, it is a last chance for redemption in a tournament that looked to be promising so much before they crashed head-first into Spain in the quarter-finals. After that, it was Slovenia who took them apart. Another lacklustre display like that and the Italians will surely take advantage.
The Azzurri came so close to knocking out Lithuania in the last eight and then just ran out of steam against Ukraine but they’ve showed enough hunger and ambition to represent great value for the win at 2.35. But they’ve also been slow starters at times, so have a punt on the 2/1 half time/full time combo at 7.25.
Saturday’s other consolation play-off is virtually meaningless with the hosts trying to wave goodbye with a win by earning fifth place against Ukraine. Both teams have combined for an average of 144.6 points per game but with a little showboating allowed on their final appearance, it should push the total points line over 151, available at 1.90. Slovenia, on home soil, should come out on top but take the Ukrainians on the +9 handicap at 1.95.
