Capital city sees its first hockey game of the new season tonight as Washington go up against the Winnipeg Jets at the Verizon Center.
It was a sketchy start for the Capitals on Saturday, but a home matchup against the Jets is a perfect opportunity to kick start. Winnipeg have only managed a solitary tally in each of their first two games, and had a tough loss last night in Boston.
It should also be backup goalie Al Montoya in net for the Jets instead of Ondrej Pavelec, with goalies rarely playing both times on a back to back. The Caps are big favourites for this at 1.85, they could well overturn a -1.5 goal handicap at 2.50.
One team particularly impressive in their first game were the Florida Panthers, who dominated the Carolina Hurricanes 5-1, before being shut down completely by Ottawa to bring them down to earth. They visit Montreal's famous Bell Centre and its raucous home crowd to play the Canadians.
Those fans will be anxious for a win and to see an improvement; most importantly on offense, after they lost to huge rivals Toronto. I think they'll leave disappointed despite being generous favourites at 2.10, the Panthers for me are the better team and great value at 3.00.
Later on the reigning Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings are in Colorado to play the Avalanche, with both teams attempting to bounce back from opening night losses. Despite not making the playoffs, Colorado swept all four games against LA last season, a real coup for their young team. I see that streak ending here though, as the Kings are a stronger team more capable of bouncing back, they start at 2.30.
Best Bet: Florida Panthers to win at 3.00.
