Beaten finalists Boston face an early test of their capabilities to make another deep run. This contest may be the start of a new rivalry with the Detroit Red Wings as they compete for the Atlantic Division.
The Red Wings have been the dominant side in both their outings but only escaped with a pair of one goal victories. Sooner or later the huge discrepancy between shots for and against will pay off.
Jarome Iginla and Loui Eriksson give Boston greater scoring potential than they've had previously, otherwise they have a very familiar look - and that's not a criticism. In such a tight encounter containing two very good teams the likelihood of a tie through regulation looks strong at 3.80.
Tim Thomas' surprise return to the NHL after a year long absence makes the Florida Panthers a very interesting proposition. If the 39 year old former playoff MVP can show he hasn't missed a step he can steal any game for the Cats. You'll get very long odds on them sneaking an upset tonight though as they pay a visit to a strong St Louis team - one of them will suffer a first loss.
Another early bright spot for Florida was second overall pick Alexander Barkov, scoring his first NHL goal in his first game. Alongside Tomas Fleischmann and Kris Versteeg they have more talent than they are given credit for.
St Louis can match them in that area with the added dimension of size. Captain David Backes and TJ Oshie were outstanding in Thursday's win. This is unlikely to be the rout the odds suggest, but don't pass on the Blues at 1.75.
Most entertaining team to watch so far has to be the Washington Capitals, a total of 18 goals have been scored across their two outings. Their opponents Dallas are still integrating the likes of Tyler Seguin and Sergei Gonchar into a fresh lineup, as well as that new Head Coach Lindy Ruff is going through a similar process.
The Caps' slick powerplay has picked up from where it left off and Alex Ovechkin is reaping the benefits. Ovi has three goals already and his 20 shots are six more than any other player. Get on over 5.5 total goals at 1.78 and a Capitals win at 2.55.
