NHL Betting: Penguins To Pick Up The Points In Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh Penguins 1.88 Draw 3.95 New Jersey Devils 3.60

A first of four meetings between these Metropolitan Division candidates and it's fair to say they've both been a little disjointed so far.

In Pittsburgh's case it's clearly just a case of finding their groove and getting settled into new coach Mike Johnston's philosophies, at some point they're destined to take off.

This is always a poignant contest for the Devils' Jaromir Jagr who won multiple Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh, the 42-year-old continues to defy the laws of ageing and netted the overtime game winner against Ottawa on Saturday which also arrested a four game losing streak.

These are currently the two sharpest powerplay units in the NHL but there's a major gap between NJ at 28.6% and the electric Pens up at a dynamite 40%, they make a goal seem inevitable frighteningly often.

Unfortunately for Pittsburgh they will lose one of their important young defenceman Olli Maatta indefinitely as he has surgery on a thyroid tumour, the 20-year-old Finn has enjoyed a rapid rise and had been logging over 20 minutes of ice time regularly.

As the only team in the East to have already notched four road victories the Devils have enjoyed away pressures so far but I see them getting outmaneuvered by the Pens here.

Toronto Maple Leafs 1.75 Draw 4.15 Buffalo Sabres 4.00

It's not been the start to the season either of these clubs had in mind but it's Buffalo who come into this clash on the back of a victory after a remarkable success over San Jose on Saturday.

Only their second win of the season was enough to distinguish themselves from Carolina at the foot of the East however it's going to take a lot more improvement to suggest they'll do anything apart from struggle this season.

Goalscoring is the obvious problem and clearly a continuation of last season's offensive which was the worst of any team this century. They've already been shutout three times and only scored more than two goals once in their opening nine contests with the powerplay unit also yet to get off the mark.

Toronto have also been weak up front in the last 10 days briefly breaking out for a good win over the NY Islanders, those numbing losses came against Boston and Detroit who are much more useful than tonight's opponents.

I can't endorse taking the Sabres as much as I'd like to pick out their wins, makes more sense to go for the Leafs over the handicap whilst their stock is a little low at 2.33.

Best Bet: Pittsburgh Penguins to win at 1.88
