NHL Betting: Phoenix to rise and beat Edmonton

Phoenix are yet to suffer a regulation defeat at home this season and I expect them to extend that run versus the Edmonton Oilers.

The Coyotes are in healthy shape despite coming in off a heavy loss to LA. This is perhaps the strongest they've been upfront in a long time and they have underrated depth in their forwards.

Signs of improvement are there for Edmonton with consecutive victories on the road but their star lines continue to be far too easy to score on, as evidenced by some heavy minus ratings for the likes of Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

Oilers' center Mark Arcobello joined some illustrious company when he amassed 10 assists in his first 10 NHL games. Only Sidney Crosby and Patrick Kane have also achieved that feat in the past 20 years.

At the other end of the spectrum for Edmonton is the continued impotence of Nail Yakupov. The goalie he will be facing today, Mike Smith has more goals this season than the 2012 first overall pick. Back Phoenix to seal two points by a clear margin with the -1.5 handicap at 2.55.

A free-flowing game is in prospect at the Scotiabank Saddledome between Calgary and Washington - two clubs well aware that their strengths are more with the puck than without.

Calgary have spent most of the time on the road and for that reason you can forgive some of their more lax defensive efforts. They've still been far from the cannon fodder that many (including myself) expected and that is down to coach Bob Hartley passing on a positive mentality.

Epitomising the defiant attitude of the Flames is the successes of both Jiri Hudler at over a point per game and the rave reviews of maturity being earned by rookie Sean Monahan.

No prizes for guessing who leads the scoring for both Washington and in the NHL overall. Alex Ovechkin is red hot with 10 goals in 10 games and partner in crime Nicklas Backstrom is racking up the assists.

The Caps aren't a convincing enough road team to warrant their lead in the odds for me, so take Calgary out at 2.70.
