Conceding in the final minute before dropping a shootout to Montreal on Wednesday means that the New Jersey will be trying to improve on a record of two wins in seven against Detroit tonight.
A 6-3 loss to Philadelphia ended the Red Wings' four match winning streak though at least they kept up their hot offensive play with 21 goals across those five outings. That scoring run continues even in the face of a string of injuries that now include Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg.
It's a relatively even rink with the Devils though, as amongst others they are without captain Bryce Salvador and Adam Larsson on defence, who would both log serious minutes.
Back-up goalie Jonas Gustavsson actually has more wins for the Wings than Jimmy Howard despite featuring in nine games to the regular starter's 20. The Swede, nicknamed "The Monster", is yet to lose in regulation and I like his chances of keeping that up. Detroit's price of 2.60 looks generous too considering their excellent performances on the road all year, so take the Red Wings inside regulation.
The Anaheim Ducks face off with the Chicago Blackhawks tonight. The Ducks have been stagnating somewhat, losing out to a their rivals recently and could do with the confidence boost that comes from beating another top side.
Chicago jumped to the top of the league on the back of six straight victories all on their road but lost back at United Center to Dallas on Tuesday, before an assignment versus Minnesota last night.
Patrick Kane has been the key cog in the offence, tearing it up and only failing to register at least a point in two contests through the entirety of November.
Other positives have to be the development of Brandon Saad and a big spike in production from premier defence-man Duncan Keith.
One major surprise about Chicago - particularly when they were so good last season - is their abysmal penalty killing, with a 67.6% success rate at home. Fortunately they have spent less time shorthanded than any other club so the troubles have been masked.
Anaheim are so far out it's very tempting but they are not the same powerhouse away from home. So I'll take the Blackhawks with a -1.5 handicap at 2.55.
