Tampa Bay Lightning at Washington Capitals
A decider for the season series here as each team already has a win in the bag, Washington took the most recent contest 5-3 just four days ago.
In their games in the interim the fortunes were reversed and Tampa Bay returned to winning ways at home to Carolina whilst the Caps dropped in OT to Columbus.
Going back to Monday's contest though and a goal inside the first minute by Alex Ovechkin as well as quick strikes any time the Lightning got on the board made sure Washington always had the edge.
They're a very good team when in front and a very bad one when behind.
Steven Stamkos may have scored his 250th NHL goal that night but the Caps got after him in truth and he was an overall -3, any time your top line is outplayed that convincingly you're in trouble.
It's a rare sight from Tampa's point of view it must be said and with their added depth I'll tip the Bolts to prove they're the better overall team tonight at 2.50.
Nashville Predators at San Jose Sharks
San Jose may have turned a corner with six wins from seven but that's still not enough for them to eclipse Nashville in the form table.
It's also the midpoint of a five game homestand for the Sharks and so far they're making it count with victories over Edmonton and Minnesota, including tonight the rest of their December gets very difficult; I'm interested to see how they handle it.
This is the first of three contests this season but Nashville have a 7-1-1 record against Pacific Division sides so far and are also seeking a third consecutive victory coming in.
Pekka Rinne continues to set the Vezina Trophy pace allowing just a single goal in his last two starts, the big Finn cuts an imposing figure to shooters in this kind of form.
One man in the mood for that challenge is Joe Pavelski who's produced back to back multiple goal performances, the lesser heralded Tommy Wingels would also be a solid pick to score tonight.
The Preds have been the most dominant even strength outfit mainly because of their defence allowing the fewest goals of any team 5 on 5, it's frightening to think what could be happening if they improved on both sides of the special teams coin.
Luckily for Peter Laviolette his charges are the least penalised in the NHL so I can't really see where San Jose will be able to find an edge, back Nashville to stay hot.
Best Bet: Nashville Predators to win at 2.70
